There are two detectors continuing to operate at RHIC: STAR (6 o'clock, and near the AGS-to-RHIC Transfer Line) and PHENIX (8 o'clock). PHOBOS (10 o'clock) completed its operation in 2005, and BRAHMS (2 o'clock) in 2006.

Data PHOBOS gathers counts how many particles come out of the
collisions at right angles. These would be the particles with the
highest degree of energy. Baker said, "When collisions happen, it is
like two pancakes hitting each other. The particles that come out at
right angles are more in the center of the collision."
He went on, "We are getting the number of particles in the realm of
prediction, but in the low end. Some models assumed a larger number of
collisions."
The silicon detectors of PHOBOS measure the temperature, size and the
density of the atomic collisions. The hope is this detector will observe
the phase transition between ordinary matter and the quark-gluon plasma
that is thought to have existed immediately after the beginning of the
universe.
Baker, who at twelve years old decided on physics as a career after
reading the science essays of Isaac Asimov, was part of the early
planning stages of RHIC. PHOBOS had begun as a larger project called
Mars before RHIC went into operation. When Mars was scaled back, the
project was renamed after one of the planet's moons.

COMMISSIONING:
Acceleration and storage of beams in the Blue Ring took place on June 1, and that in the Yellow Ring on June 6. These led to the achievement of collisions in the STAR and PHOBOS detectors on June 12 at the beam energy of 28 GeV/u (or the total collision energy 56×A GeV). Collisions in the PHENIX and BRAHMS detectors were observed 3 days later.

We worked at Brookhaven for five years with PHOBOS, learned a fair amount, and now my group has moved to CERN, to the LHC, where we will shortly be looking at collisions of lead on lead at unprecedented energy. We're part of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector.
Well, we first proposed a slightly more expensive experiment called the Modular Array for RHIC Spectra, or MARS. That was considered too expensive, so we came up with a reduced version and one of my colleagues at MIT said that, since Mars was too expensive, why not build the moon of Mars, which is Phobos. And if that was still considered too expensive, we figured we'd come up with Deimos, a still smaller moon of Mars

“Shock and Awe” invasion phase (March 19 - May 1, 2003)
RHIC carried out a two-month programme of deuteron-gold collisions, beginning in March 2003, with each beam accelerated to 100 GeV/ nucleon (as in the gold-gold collisions).
In the first results from this run, all four of the RHIC experiments (BRAHM*A*S, PHENIX, PHOBOS and STAR) produced data showing no indication of suppression at large transverse momenta for deuteron-gold collisions, clearly indicating that the initial-state effects are small, and the suppression effect observed at large transverse momentum in gold-gold collisions is indeed due to jet energy loss.

Findings intensify search for new form of matter

UPTON, NY — The latest results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), the world’s most powerful facility for nuclear physics research, strengthen scientists’ confidence that RHIC collisions of gold ions have created unusual conditions and that they are on the right path to discover a form of matter called the quark-gluon plasma, believed to have existed in the first microseconds after the birth of the universe. The results will be presented at a special colloquium at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory on June 18 at 11 a.m., to coincide with the submission of scientific papers on the results to Physical Review Letters by three of RHIC’s international collaborations.
RHIC findings come from experiments conducted in March of 2003
The RHIC data presented at Quark Matter are from January through March of 2003, when beams of heavy gold nuclei were collided with beams of deuterons, which are much smaller and lighter nuclei, each consisting of one proton plus one neutron. These deuteron-gold runs, along with other data from colliding two beams of protons, serve as a basis for comparison for the gold-gold collisions at RHIC
new evidence was presented that gold-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are producing an extremely dense form of matter — which may, quite possibly, be the long-sought quark-gluon plasma. There was also animated discussion about other intriguing RHIC results, including the likelihood that RHIC’s experiments have detected the existence of an “anti-pentaquark,” an exotic type of particle containing five quarks, and may have uncovered signs of another dense form of matter called color glass condensate.

Manned space exploration in the 21st century holds exciting prospects for the advancement of science and the expansion of the hum an experience. Plans include the Alpha space station, an outpost on the Moon, exploration of near asteroids, and a piloted mission to Mars. However, for space exploration to go on, human crew members must be protected against the harsh environment of space, in particular, against the hazards of ionizing radiation.

The NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL), a $34-million facility, jointly managed during a four-year construction project by the DOE’s Office of Science and NASA’s Johnson Space Center, is one of the few places in the world that can simulate the harsh cosmic and solar radiation environment found in space. NASA Mission Discovers Particle Accelerator in Heart of Van Allen Radiation Belts
Scientists have discovered a massive particle accelerator in the heart of one of the harshest regions of near-Earth space, a region of super-energetic, charged particles surrounding the globe called the Van Allen radiation belts. Scientists knew that something in space accelerated particles in the radiation belts to more than 99 percent the speed of light but they didn't know what that something was. New results from NASA's Van Allen Probes now show that the acceleration energy comes from within the belts themselves. Particles inside the belts are sped up by local kicks of energy, buffeting the particles to ever faster speeds, much like a perfectly timed push on a moving swing.

Scientists at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island announced yesterday that experiments at its Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider - RHIC, for short, and pronounced "rick" - had produced a state of matter that is unexpectedly sloshy.
"Every substance known to mankind before would evaporate and become a gas at two million, three million degrees," said Dr. Dmitri Kharzeev, a theoretical physicist at Brookhaven. "So the big surprise here is the matter created at RHIC is a liquid."
It even approaches the best of all possible liquids, with almost no viscosity. "It's more fluid than the water in this glass," Dr. Kharzeev said, referring to a glass of water in front of him at a news conference at a meeting of the American Physical Society in Tampa, Fla.

A fireball created in a US particle accelerator has the characteristics of a black hole, a physicist has said.
It was generated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in New York, US, which smashes beams of gold nuclei together at near light speeds. Horatiu Nastase says his calculations show that the core of the fireball has a striking similarity to a black hole.

Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions
| It is now generally agreed that the thermalization of kinetic energy in nuclear collisions is driven by the strong interaction among the gluons, the quanta of the field that binds the quarks into nucleons. Possessing a larger "color charge" than quarks, gluons interact more strongly, and they have a softer momentum distribution to begin with and thus are easily stopped. Calculations made within the framework of perturbation theory predict that this mechanism can produce an initial temperature in excess of 5 trillion degrees in collisions of two Au nuclei at the energy range of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Quite general arguments can be made that the dynamics of gluons at high density can be well described by classical field theory. It thus makes sense to consider the collision between two nuclei as a collision among two localized wave packets of gluonic field. The gluon wave packets contained in atomic nuclei are complex and not yet well understood. Therefore, it seems useful to first consider collisions between two Gaussian gluon wave packets, in order to explore the mechanism by which the coherence of the field configurations is destroyed and kinetic energy is converted into heat. | |
Lattice Simulations
| Numerical simulations of collision of two gluon wave packets in one dimension indicated the presence of an effective mechanism that transfers energy from short wavelength ("hard") modes of the glue field to long wavelength ("soft") modes. But one dimensional calculations are special because the wavepackets cannot disperse in a transverse direction. Three dimensional calculations are more realistic, but they require a much larger number of grid points. With the multi-processor parallel computer BRAHMA these calculations have become feasible, for the first time. For the simulation of two scattering wave packets, the grid (commonly called the "lattice") that represents the gauge fields must have a much longer extension in the longitudinal direction than in the transverse ones. This fact allows, in a natural way, for the break-up of the full lattice into lengthy segments that can be handled by different processors. Only the information about the fields on the boundary planes between different lattice segments needs to be transmitted between processors after each time step of the computation. Thus, the amount of inter-processor communication required grows only linearly wih the number of processors, i.e. the computational task can be efficiently parallelized. |
Results
| The results of our numerical simulations demonstrate impressively that three-dimensional gluon wave packets disintegrate (or in more technically correct terminology: "decohere") rapidly after the collision. An example is shown in the following picture. The delay between the collision itself and the following disintegration is a measure of the equilibration time of a perturbed gluon field configuration. The inverse time, or equilibration rate, increases with the strength of the gluon-gluon interaction and also with the intensity of the colliding gluon waves. The phenomenon of decoherence is basically connected with the intrinsically nonlinear dynamics of the gluon field itself, which lets the perturbed state evolve in chaotic fashion, rather than regularly of "coherently". In order to clearly observe this phenomenon in our simulations, it was essential to be able to perform computations on threedimensional lattices, which became possible only with our distributed multi-processor facility BRAHMA. |

RHIC in fiction
The novel Cosm (ISBN 0-380-79052-1) by the American author Gregory Benford takes place at RHIC. The science fiction setting describes the main character Alicia Butterworth, a physicist at the BRAHMS experiment, and a new universe being created in RHIC by accident, while running with uranium ions.
New Beams Take Flight at RHIC
One of the newly available ion beams is a beam of uranium ions. Collisions of uranium ions are interesting for the RHIC program — where physicists are recreating conditions of the early universe to learn more about the forces that hold matter together — because of their football shape and large number of protons and neutrons. Head-on collisions of two tiny uranium ions positioned like colliding spiraling footballs would produce a speck of matter with even greater energy density than the spherical gold ion collisions currently creating a
hot soup of quarks and gluons at RHIC. This higher energy density will allow scientists to study the evolution of this early-universe substance over a wider range of conditions than has been previously accessible at RHIC.
Head-on collisions with the uranium ions oriented vertically, like footballs prepared for a kick-off, are also of great interest: They will permit scientists at RHIC to separate the effects of extremely hot matter formed when two spherical gold ions overlap only partially on impact (forming a similar football-shaped interaction region) from effects of the ultra-strong magnetic fields produced in such non-head-on collisions.The Cosmic Origins of Uranium

Kinder-Geiger was an associate scientist who specialized in the theory of BNL's Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), which is expected to begin operation next year. Kinder-Geiger received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Frankfurt, Germany in 1989.
Kinder-Geiger was traveling on Swissair en route to speak at a physics workshop at the European Center for Theoretical Studies in Trento, Italy, and to continue his work with physicists at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland.
"Klaus was an incredibly brilliant, energetic, and imaginative young theorist," said Rob Pisarski, head of the Nuclear Theory Group, in which Kinder-Geiger worked. "He was one of the top physicists in the world in the quark-gluon plasma."
Quark-gluon plasma is a state of matter that was created just moments after the Big Bang, and that physicists hope to produce again at RHIC. "Klaus was extraordinary in being able to contribute to physics all of the way from the abstract formalism of quantum chromodynamics (the modern theory of protons and neutrons) to what will actually be observed when nuclei are smashed together at RHIC," said Pisarski.
